Week of December 8-12, 2008

This week we are spending a large amount of time preparing for the Christmas program on the 16th, so our academic workload will be lighter this week. We will still be studying, just not as much as a normal week.

Thursday 12/11/08

  • Language Arts 3: Today we read "Kids in Business" about young children who started their own businesses. They sold things like honey, homemade bread, jewelry, and hand painted clothing! Homework: Spelling sentences on handwriting paper. Underline the word.
  • Language Arts 4: Today we read "Shadow of a Bull" about a young man named Manolo who lacks the desire to follow his father's footsteps into bullfighting. He learns the hard way how dangerous the sport really is. Homework: Spelling sentences on handwriting paper. Underline the word.
  • Social Studies 3/4: Today we learned a little bit about three towns and cities in the Hoosier state: Paoli, South Bend, and Indianapolis. We broke into groups to design travel brochures encouraging tourists to visit one of the cities and they came out great! No homework.
  • PE: Today we began learning the sport of badminton.
  • We also received letters from our Austrian pen pals and began writing responses to them. I expect to have this batch of letters ready to mail by the end of next week so they can be mailed before we leave for break. The students in Vienna will not receive them until after the holidays but we are still sending them festive Christmas cards and learning how to say "Merry Christmas" in German. Our pronunciation is probably wrong but it's still fun!

Wednesday 12/10/08

  • Math 3: Today we used our colored stones to learn about parts of a set and wrote fractions to represent the fractional part of a set. Most students completed 61A in class. Homework: 61B.
  • Language Arts 3/4: No language arts today - Homework: Spelling words 3x.
  • Science/Social Studies 3/4: Today we read a Scholastic News with a cover story about the possibility of life on Mars. It tied in nicely with the beginning of our new science unit on stars and constellations. We learned how to use a mnemonic device and made up our own devices to help us remember the names of the planets. Some of you may remember "My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas"...you can tell your child, "When I was your age, Pluto was a planet." :) We also wrote acrostic poems using the word STARS. No homework.

Tuesday 12/9/08

  • Language Arts 3/4: Today we studied singular and plural nouns and learned some of the basic rules for making singular nouns into plural nouns. We were confused by some nouns that "don't follow the rules" like person, which becomes people, and moose, which is still moose in the plural sense. Homework: Spelling words in ABC order on handwriting paper.
  • Religion 3/4: Today we finished up the unit we've been studying in religion and continued to practice our books of the Bible.
  • We used our social studies time to concentrate on our solos and we also enjoyed playing volleyball during PE.
Monday 12/8/08
  • Math 3: We used measuring cups to determine how many halves, thirds, and fourths make up one cup. We also experimented with teaspoons and tablespoons and learned their abbreviations. We completed 60 A in class. Homework: 60B, which includes a TIMED fact sheet - complete as many as you can in four minutes, then switch to a colored pencil to finish the page.
  • Religion 3/4: We continued practicing the books of the Bible and learned about Absalom.
  • Science 3/4: We began a new unit called Stars and Constellations and conducted an experiment in which we learned that objects appear larger when they are closer and appear smaller when they are farther away. We read about the telescope and some of the men and women who paved the way for today's astronomers and helped us better understand the universe. We also talked about the importance of worshiping the CREATOR rather than the created...the universe is awe-inspiring and may move man to worship and we must be careful where we direct our worship! No homework.

Family Tree Project

In social studies we've been reading about how families keep records and one of the most popular methods is through genealogy and family trees. So, we are going to make our own family trees. Each person will be responsible to do a bit of research on their family and create a family tree. Your tree should go back at LEAST to your grandparents, but try to go back even farther - it will be cool to see how far back our family lines go. As far as details go, I only require first names - if you choose to add last names that's fine. Birth/death dates are not necessary. Note: This is NOT something we will be working on during classtime - it is a homework project and meant to be worked on at home, as a family.

All I'm asking is for it to be done on a blank piece of white paper, but some students expressed interest in using posterboard and that is fine, too. The family trees will be on display here at school so please be neat and colorful!

Due date is Monday, November 24, 2008.

Week of November 17-21, 2008

A few notes about this week:

  • We will begin writing to our new penpals, students at Vienna Christian School in Vienna, Austria. They come from many different countries and we are excited to learn about their home cultures! I've learned that our new friends love Jolly Ranchers, so if you'd like to donate a small pack of them to send with our first letters that would be fine (please send them with your child by Friday).
  • Third graders are beginning a reading incentive program to correspond with our new literature unit, Money. For every 10 minutes spent reading, students may earn $1, which can be spent in the "store" at designated times throughout our unit. Check your child's planner for the "timeslip", which will be due every Monday.
  • It is the 12th week for spelling words, which means this is a review week. Any spelling words your child has this week are words that were previously missed, either on the Monday pre-test or the Friday spelling test. Some students have no words at all. Spelling homework still applies to any student who has words in their planner (except ABC order, which can't be done with one word).

Famous Rocks Project/Unit Wrap-up

Next week we will be concluding our science unit on Rock and Minerals. Here is what to expect...

  • Chapter review (found in student booklet) should be completed by Tuesday 10/14. We will go over it together on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
  • Chapter test will be Wednesday 10/15. Study the student packet: be familiar with all the vocabulary terms (in yellow), know the rock cycle, and be able to name ways we use rocks, minerals, and soil.
  • The Famous Rock projects are due Friday 10/17. I am allowing classtime on Tuesday for students to work on them, but they will most likely need more time than that to complete the project. Please make sure to bring books or Internet articles to school on Tuesday so that you have something to do! Also, please bring 20 cents to cover the cost of your posterboard. An information sheet outlining this project was sent home today; if you have any further questions please call or email me! 330-701-9126 or bertschirae@gmail.com.

Philosophy of Homework

Since I have only been teaching here for two weeks and therefore wasn't able to talk with parents at orientation, I thought it would be best to make my homework policy clear and ensure that you know exactly what I expect from my students in the area of homework.

I view homework is an opportunity for students to gain extra skills practice, build on what they've already learned in class, and work on being responsible. I will never assign for homework something that I have not already taught or explained in class. Nor will I assign homework simply because I ran out of time to teach or cover something in class. I do my best to give homework that is meaningful and useful, and I expect students to do their best to complete it on time and in a legible manner.

Homework should be turned into the basket in the morning before 8:45, which is when we go next door for devotions with the 5th and 6th graders. At that time, any homework that has not been turned in will be recorded on a "Missing Work" form. On this form, student will record his name, the date, the assignment, and tell me why the homework is missing. I keep these forms for reference and can show them to parents during conference time if necessary. Then the student will spend morning break and/or recess with me, depending on how long it takes the student to complete the homework assignment.

In the afternoons I allow 10-15 minutes for students to gather their things to take home. I direct their attention to the homework board, where they can see exactly what their homework is for the night. At this point it becomes the student's responsibility to write down his assignments, although I have to check each planner to ensure that this has happened. Rarely (if ever) will I give homework in every subject - a typical night will consist of math and one or two other subjects. If your homework is taking longer than 45 minutes to complete or you feel as though the workload is too much, please talk to me! Homework will be due the next day unless noted otherwise. We do not have science and social studies every day, so if there is homework in those subjects then students typically have two days to complete the assignment.

I hope this helps you better understand how I handle the homework process. I appreciate your help at home in keeping your child accountable for his work, and it's my goal that together we can help foster a bit more independence and responsibilty in your student!!
