Week of January 5-9, 2008

Welcome back! I trust everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

Friday 1/9/09
  • Math 3: Today we took math tests and then worked on critical thinking/brain teasers.
  • Language Arts 3/4: Today we took our spelling tests and worked on finishing up worksheets from earlier in the week. Fourth graders finished preparing for their first LC on Monday.
  • Religion 3/4:This afternoon we practiced looking up scripture references in our Bibles, and we talked about the importance of our Christian friends. Continue to practice memory work with the books of the Bible
  • Science 3/4: We discovered stars and galaxies today through several activities. We saw how light reflected and refracted on aluminum foil and in water, and we made a spiral galaxy in a jar. We also enjoyed a tasty treat, galaxy applesauce. We used our spoons to swirl cinnamon into our applesauce and create a spiral galaxy shape.
  • Art 3/4: Today was a free day in art and everyone had fun coming up with abstract projects, from 3-D houses to collages to valentine's day pictures using only what we found in the scrap box!
Thursday 1/8/09
  • Math 3: Today we learned again how to subtract two two-digit numbers. This can be tricky when it comes to trading a ten for ten ones but we have a strategy! We completed 67A in class. Homework: 67B and oral facts 67.
  • Language Arts 3: We read "The Golden Touch" and learned a valuable lesson about greed. We also talked about cause and effect and found examples of cause and effect in the story. Study for spelling tests tomorrow!
  • Language Arts 4:Today we started a new literature unit on survival. Our first story was about an arctic explorer. With this new unit we are going to begin working in literature circles, a structured book discussion. From here on I'll refer to literature circles as LC. Each student will play a different role and will be required to do some work before the discussion. For the first few stories I will assist and supervise both the LC prep and the LC, but LC are intended to be mainly student-led. Eventually we'll work through a short novel using LC as a guide. Study for spelling tests tomorrow!
  • Religion 3/4: Today we talked some more about Solomon's temple and all the ornate details within. Continue to practice books of the Bible.
  • Social Studies 3/4: We worked with a partner to read and investigate different goods, services, and jobs that Indiana has to offer. We also came up with questions we would ask someone working in a specific type of service job.
Wednesday 1/7/09

  • Math 3: Today we reviewed how to find a missing addend in a some, some more story problem. We are still struggling to remember what is the addend and what is the sum. In class we finished 66A. Homework: 66B.
  • Language Arts 3: Third graders read "The Cobbler's Song" with a partner and took a comprehension quiz. They also got more practice with compound words and wrote sentences using their compound words. Homework: Spelling sentences.
  • Language Arts 4: Today we spent a lot of time talking about topic sentences and supporting details. We looked for topic sentences in several paragraphs and then identified the supporting details within the paragraph. This is something we've been working on for awhile and will continue to review until it is solid! Homework: Spelling sentences.
  • Science 3/4: After reviewing the results of yesterday's experiment, we read in our science packets about asteroids, comets, and meteors. It was tricky trying to remember the difference between a meteor, a meteoroid, and a meteorite...see if your student can tell you the differences!
  • Spanish 3/4: Yes, we're learning some Spanish now! We already know how to say things like the date, months, days, and numbers. Now we are going to begin learning some conversational Spanish so that we can practice speaking to one another. Today we learned how to say "how are you" in the formal and informal tenses, and we also learned several emotions to use in the response.
  • Today was also a Scholastic News day - some things we read about included a chimpanzee acting as a surrogate mother to two tiger cubs in a Florida zoo, the ice hotel in Sweden, and a new super fast car called the Bloodhound.
Tuesday 1/6/09

  • If a pizza form came home today it must be returned THURSDAY 1/8/09

Homework: 65A, 65B, Fact Master 65 (some of this was completed in class but varied with each student. Check planner for specific assignment.
  • Language Arts 3: We finished reading yesterday's story and learned that sometimes you're better off paying your debts than trying to avoid them! We took a quiz and completed our spelling homework (3x) in class.
